Hybrid app
A mobile application that combines web technologies with native app features, allowing it to run on multiple platforms from a single codebase.
What is Hybrid app?
What is Hybrid app?
A hybrid app is built with web technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript and runs inside a native shell, typically with Ionic and Capacitor or the older Cordova. The term is often stretched to cover cross-platform frameworks like Flutter and React Native, which also share one codebase but render native or engine-drawn interfaces rather than web pages. This approach allows apps to run on multiple platforms (iOS, Android) using a single codebase. Hybrid apps balance performance with development efficiency, enabling faster releases and easier maintenance compared to fully native applications.
Hybrid vs cross-platform: clearing up the terms
"Hybrid" is used loosely, and the difference affects performance and cost.
- Hybrid (web view) apps are built with web technologies and run inside a native shell that displays them through a built-in browser component, called a web view. Ionic with Capacitor, and the older Apache Cordova, work this way. Plugins give the web code access to the camera, storage, notifications and other device features.
- Cross-platform apps built with Flutter or React Native also share one codebase across iOS and Android, but they do not render web pages. React Native turns JavaScript components into real native interface elements. Flutter draws its own interface with its own rendering engine. Both usually perform closer to native than a web view app.
Many people call all of these "hybrid," meaning "not fully native." When you talk to a development team, ask which kind they mean.
How a hybrid app works: an example
Consider a loyalty app for a retail chain. The team builds the screens once, with Ionic or with Flutter. The same code produces an iOS app and an Android app, each published to its own store. One plugin handles push notifications, another uses the camera to scan receipts. When the team adds a new rewards screen, it ships to both platforms in the same release.
Some platform-specific code may still be needed, for example to integrate a local payment provider that only offers native iOS and Android libraries.
When hybrid or cross-platform is the right call
- You need iOS and Android, and the budget covers one team, not two.
- The app is mostly forms, lists, content and transactions: booking, ordering, loyalty, field service, internal tools.
- Speed to market matters, such as an MVP where you want to test the idea on both platforms at once.
- You already have a web app and want to reuse much of it (a good case for web view hybrid).
Between the two, Flutter and React Native are usually the stronger choice for customer-facing apps where smooth scrolling and animation matter.
When to choose native instead
- Graphics-heavy apps, games, augmented reality, or real-time audio and video.
- Heavy background processing, or deep integration with Bluetooth devices, sensors or wearables.
- Apps that must adopt new iOS or Android features the day they launch.
See native app for a side-by-side comparison.
Trade-offs to plan for
- Plugin dependency. Device features rely on plugins, and an unmaintained plugin can block an operating system update.
- Framework upgrades. Flutter and React Native evolve quickly. Skipping upgrades makes them harder later.
- Right-to-left layouts. Arabic and Kurdish interfaces work in all major frameworks, but third-party components do not always mirror correctly. Test right-to-left from the first screens.
- App size and start-up time can be larger than a comparable native app.
What to ask your development team
- Which features need native code or plugins, and are those plugins actively maintained?
- How will the app handle right-to-left layouts and Kurdish and Arabic fonts?
