Native App
A mobile application built specifically for a particular platform, such as iOS or Android, using platform-specific languages and tools.
What is Native App?
What is Native App?
A native app is developed exclusively for a specific operating system, such as iOS or Android, using platform-native frameworks and languages (like Swift for iOS or Kotlin for Android). Native apps deliver the highest performance, best responsiveness, and full access to device features such as cameras, sensors, and push notifications. They offer smoother user experiences compared to hybrid or web apps, making them ideal for complex or high-performance applications.
How native app development works
A native app is built with the tools each platform's maker provides. For iOS, that means Swift with Apple's frameworks such as SwiftUI and UIKit, built in Xcode. For Android, it means Kotlin (or Java) with Jetpack Compose or Android's traditional views, built in Android Studio.
The practical consequence: an app for both platforms is usually two separate codebases, built and maintained by developers who specialize in each. The two apps can share a back end and a design, but the app code is written twice.
In return, the app uses the platform's own interface components, can adopt new operating system features as soon as they ship, and talks to the hardware without an extra layer in between.
Native vs hybrid vs cross-platform
Buyers often hear these three terms used interchangeably. They are not the same.
- Native: one codebase per platform, written in Swift and Kotlin, using the platform's own interface components. Best performance and full, immediate access to device features. Highest cost when you need both iOS and Android.
- Cross-platform (Flutter, React Native): one shared codebase, with a small amount of platform-specific code where needed. Flutter draws its own interface; React Native uses native components. Performance is close to native for most apps, device features come through plugins or custom native code, and cost is lower.
- Hybrid (web view, such as Ionic with Capacitor): a web app packaged inside a native shell. One web codebase, device features through plugins. Good for simple apps, weaker for complex or animation-heavy interfaces. Usually the lowest cost.
See hybrid app for more on the last two.
When native is the right choice
- Performance-critical apps: games, video or audio editing, augmented reality, heavy animation.
- Deep hardware use: Bluetooth devices, background location, advanced camera control, health sensors.
- Platform features on day one: home screen widgets, watch apps, newly released OS capabilities.
- Only one platform matters: if nearly all your users are on Android, or on iOS, a single native app avoids the cross-platform layer entirely.
When native may be more than you need
For many business apps, such as booking, ordering, loyalty, internal tools and content apps, a cross-platform framework delivers a near-native experience at lower cost, because one team builds both platforms. The saving is not only in the first build. Every feature and fix after launch is also built once instead of twice.
Right-to-left and local language support
Apps for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region often need Arabic and Kurdish (Sorani) with right-to-left layouts, alongside English. Native iOS and Android handle right-to-left well, including mirrored layouts. Flutter and React Native support it too, but custom components, icons and third-party libraries need checking, because not every package mirrors correctly. Whichever approach you choose, test right-to-left early rather than at the end.
What to ask before choosing
- Which platforms do our users actually use?
- Which device features does the app truly need?
- What will it cost to maintain two codebases over several years, not just to build them?
- Are there performance or hardware requirements a cross-platform framework cannot meet?
